For more than 25 years, SIRS has been dedicated to the concept of
intellectual freedom and excellence in education. To further this concept, we
established SIRS Intellectual Freedom awards.

Professor, School of Library & Information
University of Wisconsin, Madison
"Intellectual freedom has been my emphasis
in research and teaching. Yet, in both areas, it is stories that I have had a
part in sharing - the stories of library media specialists in Wisconsin
especially, and throughout the United States. When library media specialists
have responded to my intellectual freedom research surveys or interviews, they
share their stories collectively. When library media specialists have spoken
to classes or published intellectual freedom articles or books that my
graduate students have read, they share their stories. When library media
specialists go about the daily work of promoting youth access to the wealth of
available resources, they are sharing by example. When library media
specialists defend access for the young, they demonstrate their commitment to
the profession's intellectual freedom ideals.
With colleagues such as these, it is no
wonder that I find it such a privilege to be a library media professional. In
my research and teaching, it is the true stories of library media
specialists that serve as a guide and an inspiration for others to follow."
