  Intellectual Freedom Awards
LLA/SIRS Alex P. Allain Intellectual Freedom Award

For more than 25 years, SIRS has been dedicated to the concept of intellectual freedom and excellence in education. To further this concept, we established SIRS Intellectual Freedom awards.

2003
Holly Priestley
Young Adult Department Head
Ouachita Parish Public Library
Monroe, Louisiana

2002
Joe Cook
Executive Director
ACLU of Louisiana
New Orleans, Louisiana

"This award stands as one of the highest honors that I have ever received, especially since it is named after Alex Allain, a Louisiana lawyer and lifelong defender of librarians serving the cause of intellectual freedom. I am proud to stand with the ACLU on behalf of librarians and everyone else to protect freedom of expression -- the indispensable condition of every other form of liberty. Let us stand together for safety and freedom, especially during this time of war, when our liberties are always at gravest risk."

2001
Charlene Cain
Associate Librarian, Paul M. Hebert Law Library
Louisiana State University
Baton Rouge, LA

1999
Dr. Barbara Forrest
Associate Professor
Southeastern Louisiana University
Hammond, LA

"I appreciate this award deeply because it places me in the company of past Louisiana recipients who have literally risked their livelihoods to defend the freedom of young people to read and to think. Their sacrifices place on all of us a greater obligation to defend the intellectual freedom guaranteed by the First Amendment."

1997

Deloris Wilson
West Monroe High School
West Monroe, LA

"As a librarian, I am charged with the responsibility of protecting First Amendment principles. If we are to protect Intellectual Freedom, then we can not be content to safeguard only popular ideas. To uphold the true meaning of our Constitution and Bill of Rights, we must be willing to fervently protect the expression of opinions and ideas which are unpopular. I humbly accept the Intellectual Freedom Award with honor and appreciation."
