SIRS Unveils Oklahoma Library Print
SIRS unveiled its tenth print in the SIRS Celebrates America's
Public Libraries Collection, the Okmulgee Public Library, this month
at the Oklahoma Library Association conference.
Located in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, this library is one of the largest
independently financed libraries in Oklahoma and the first in the
state to be built entirely by city funds. The Okmulgee Public Library
or "Reading Room" was organized by the Okmulgee Civic Club in 1905. It
was located in two small rooms at the top of a long flight of stairs
that currently houses a drugstore.
After various locations, ground was broken for the new building in
1922 and the library moved into the new facility in 1923. In 1983, the
library was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
SIRS Unveils Alabama Library Print
SIRS also unveiled the eleventh print in the collection of the
Birmingham Public Library this month at the Alabama Library
Association conference.
In 1886, the Birmingham Public Library was established as an
adjunct to the city's public schools. The library relocated to City
Hall, but was destroyed by a great fire in 1925. Two years later, a
building of Indiana limestone with an imposing neo-classical design
was completed and served as the central facility for 57 years. To
facilitate the expanding collection and increased demand for services,
a contemporary-style structure was built in 1984 that connects to the
original building.
From a room not much bigger than a closet, the Birmingham Public
Library concluded the 20th century as one of the largest and most
respected library systems in the Southeast.
Both prints can be viewed on the
SIRS Celebrates
America's Libraries web page.
