ProQuest's eLibrary Science Engages Students
Unique standards-aligned resources help educators supplement science curricula
ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN, July 7, 2005 -- ProQuest Information and Learning released today eLibrary Science, a new online curriculum and reference resource that supports the study of earth, life, physical, medical and applied sciences. The new product builds on the eLibrary tradition of blending content from a variety of sources with interactive tools that engage students. ProQuest Information and Learning, a unit of ProQuest Company, is an electronic publisher of content for libraries and educational institutions worldwide.
Designed for use in secondary school and beyond, eLibrary Science is a comprehensive resource that supports both students' and teachers' classroom needs. The thousands of full-text and multimedia files help students research and understand concepts in science, while educators can use eLibrary Science to create engaging classroom presentations, demonstrations, lessons and activities. Its unique interactive content helps teachers present--and students understand--complex concepts.
In all, more than 440 content sources including magazines and journals, books, TV and radio transcripts, Web sites, interactive multimedia and simulations, images and streaming audio and video are accessible through a powerful, intuitive search interface. Reference content is drawn from a partnership with Salem Press, publishers of high-interest titles such as Magill's Encyclopedia of Science: Animal Life, The Encyclopedia of Genetics and others, most of which are available in electronic format for the first time. Manipulative and simulation content, such as an interactive periodic table and frog dissection, gives students firsthand experience with concepts.
Like all ProQuest K-12 products, eLibrary Science unites its content and online technologies within a standards-based framework using ProQuest's proprietary, patented MediaSeek® correlation technology, which allows the knowledge database to update constantly as content and standards change. For example, a unique search option allows educators to target content by state and national science standards in the sciences. Combining the search with BookCart and QuizCart features allows educators to build persistent links to standards-aligned content, creating reading lists, topic pages, lesson plans, and student quizzes that are correlated directly to specific learning benchmarks.
eLibrary Science also includes special editorial features. "Famous Scientists" allows students to discover the lives and achievements of over 500 scientists from around the world. "Science News" highlights the latest news in the sciences with daily topical updates and "Today in Science," explores an important discovery from the past for each day of the year, engaging students through interesting events.
ProQuest is offering free trials of eLibrary Science. For more information contact ProQuest on the Web at www.proquestk12.com or call 1.800.521.0600.
