SIRS Discoverer: The Best U.S. Presidents
Few historians would dispute that Abraham Lincoln and George Washington were our most famous and accomplished presidents. But, do students know which other presidents, among the 43 who served in that office, were also revered for their significant contributions to our nation?

SIRS Researcher: Reproductive Rights of Women
Knowledge of and use of birth control, sex education, and the right to choose were the key principles advocated by the leaders of the women's equal rights movement. They preached that many other social problems were a result of denying women these rights and bringing children into the world that women didn't plan and could not support. Students can examine one of more of these enduring social issues with SIRS Researcher.

SIRS Decades: Automotive Pioneer
Steam-powered automobiles were invented near the end of the 18th century, but it was not until the invention of the internal combustion engine in 1889 that the technology improved enough to replace traditional horse-drawn carriages. The age of Henry Ford's success with the automobile was also the age of the domination of big business and the formation of trusts and monopolies that took advantage of labor and consumer prices.

  eLibrary Science: Antibiotic Basics
The history of the modern use of antibiotics started eighty years ago, in 1928. Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered penicillin growing in a laboratory experiment. It was a discovery that would change the course of history. ProQuest has created a model BookCart to use with your students to learn more about this fascinating topic -- "Antibiotic Drug Resistance."

eLibrary BookCarts: Customize Learning
How can teachers address the different reading level needs of these separate groups with one textbook? How can teachers keep curriculum topics current when textbooks are often more than five years old? eLibrary BookCarts provide collections of learning resources, on the same curriculum topic, that teachers can customize to meet the reading level and interest needs of their students.

ProQuest Platinum: The Mexican War & Cultural Impact
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on February 2, 1848, exactly 160 years ago this month. This treaty formally ended the Mexican War between the United States and Mexico. In the treaty, Mexico ceded to the United States a huge portion of what is today the American West and Southwest, including California and New Mexico. Why did the U.S. declare war against Mexico? What was the most significant battle?

  eLibrary: Celebrating Black History
Black History Month originated in 1926 as Negro History Week. February was selected for the celebration because both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, champions of the struggle for African American equality, were born in that month. ProQuest's collection of more than 650 model BookCarts includes a variety of topics that focus on Black History Month.

eLibrary CE: Library Lovers Month
February is Library Lovers Month. This is an excellent time for librarians and teachers to emphasize the love of reading many of the great books that are in the school library for enjoyment, not just for an assignment. It's also a great time to find out more about the excellent authors that have been recognized with the Nobel Prize in Literature, and more!

eLibrary Elementary: Promoting Financial Literacy
The first week of February is National Consumer Protection Week. The current sub-prime mortgage crisis is due in part to the lack of financial literacy of most of our citizens. ProQuest has created a BookCart that provides many financial literacy and economics resources from both eLibrary Elementary and websites. Teachers can use these resources to create their own activities for their students.

SIRS Spotlights + Challenge Quests
The pioneers of the American West were a culturally and ethnically diverse group. How many Western frontier cowboys were African American? Find out with our Challenge Quest.

African-American author and teacher Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, who is considered to be the "Father of Black History," established the first Negro History Week in 1926. Let SIRS shine a Spotlight on this topic in February.

World Conflicts Today
Discrimination Without Borders

After the Thirteenth Amendment, abolishing slavery was passed in 1865, white people who opposed racial equality had to resort to increasingly subtle ways of asserting their power. What can we learn about discrimination against Blacks in the United States from similarly subtle discrimination against Catholics in Northern Ireland and against Indians and Blacks in Colombia?

The Spanish-American War: Origins

One hundred years ago, on February 15, 1898, the USS Maine blew up in Havana (Cuba) harbor, touching off the Spanish-American War. Why was the USS Maine sent to Havana Harbor? What would motivate the U.S. to pursue a policy of Imperialism? How did the U.S benefit from the possessions it acquired through the war?
