CultureGrams Icon CultureGrams & World Conflicts Today Updates
Video and slideshow download features have been added to CultureGrams. These new features mean that CultureGrams' short video clips are now available to you in QuickTime or Windows Media Player formats, while themed photo slideshows can be downloaded as PowerPoint presentations.

All of these options allow you to more easily incorporate videos and slideshows into classroom presentations, save your favorites in a personal folder, and view them on computers without Internet access.

Also make sure to check out the flag outlines that have been added to our Flag Gallery. Simply click on "Print Outline" to pull up a PDF ready to be colored in by students.

Finally, don't miss the new photos that are continuously added to our Photo Gallery. Notice in particular the recently updated galleries for Ethiopia, Mauritius, Mongolia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, and Taiwan.

Stay up-to-date! Review our complete rundown of recent CultureGrams and World Conflicts Today feature and content enhancements.

Teaching Idea: A Look at Haiti
One of the most well-known teaching standards reads: "Social Studies programs should include experiences that provide for the study of culture and cultural diversity, so that the learner can give examples and describe the importance of cultural unity and diversity within and across groups."

This month, CultureGrams can transport your students to Haiti to address this important theme.

World Holidays
Holidays provide a great way to introduce students to the culture and history of a country. "Observe" a world holiday in your classroom by asking students to research the holiday's origins or learn more about a particular aspect of the country.

  Focus on a U.S. State
If you travel from northern Georgia to the Atlantic coast, you will see a range of beautiful landscapes. The Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the Appalachian Mountains, reach down across Georgia's northern border. Covered with pine trees, some of these mountains are more than 4,500 feet (1,370 m) above sea level. South of the mountains are the rolling hills of the Piedmont region. This is the most densely populated section of the state, with large cities like Atlanta and Athens.

Here are some more interesting facts about Georgia:
  • Coca-Cola went on sale for the first time in Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta on May 8, 1886.

  • Juliette Low founded the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. in Savannah in 1912.

  • Georgia's Capitol has a gold dome. The gold for the dome came from Dahlonega, Georgia, the site of one of the first gold rushes in North America.
