Music Education Works
Recent brain imaging research shows a significant correlation between improved spatial relationships and math skills with music instruction in schools. But even without additional research, many educators and parents cite a litany of traditional and well-known benefits of music instruction.
Assign researchers to answer one or more of our essential questions during Music in the Schools Month: How is your favorite music genre different from others? Who are some of the musicians who helped popularize this type of music?

Women's Ongoing Pursuit of Equal Rights
Did you know that March is Women's History Month? This quote from Dr. Jamal A. Badawin summarizes the continued struggle and progress of women in the U.S. and world for equality:
"The status which women reached during the present era was not achieved due to the kindness of men or due to natural progress. It was rather achieved through a long struggle and sacrifice on women's part, and only when society needed her contribution and work, more especially during the two world wars, and due to the escalation of technological change."
ProQuest has created a BookCart learning activity for students to research this timely topic: Women--Ongoing Struggle for Equality. What are some areas of inequality that still exist? What strategies have women used in the past to gain more equality?
Answer these questions with the all-new eLibrary (details).

Haiti & Earthquakes
January's earthquake in Haiti was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 event. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake, with more than 230,000 people identified by the Haitian government as dead, an estimated 300,000 injured, and an estimated 1M homeless.
ProQuest has created a BookCart lesson to help students learn more about "Plate Tectonics and Earthquakes."
SIRS Decades
Women's History & Gender Discrimination
March is Women's History Month. What started as "Women's History Week" in California in 1978 evolved into Women's History Month.
Feminism has altered predominant perspectives in a wide range of areas within American and Western societies, ranging from culture to law. Feminist activists have focused on campaigning for these rights: legal, bodily integrity and autonomy, anti-violence, and workplace.
Researchers can use SIRS Decades to select one issue that addresses women's equality and rights from the listing above. Students should write an essay of at least 150 words that summarizes the history of that issue including the arguments about the issue, the major progress made, and any successful strategies employed to gain greater equality.

Women in Sports
On June 23, 1972, Title IX, an unprecedented effort to end sex discrimination in education, became the law of the land.
While most famous for its requirement that schools provide girls with equal athletic opportunities, the law applies to all educational programs that receive federal funding, and to all aspects of a school's educational system.
During Women's History Month, assign students to write a report of at least 150 words that addresses the essential question for the Leading Issue:Title IX - "Should Title IX be removed from college sports?"

The Supreme Court and the 1st Amendment
"Overturning a century-old restriction," the Los Angeles Times reported in February, "the Supreme Court ruled Thursday that corporations could spend as much as they wanted to sway voters in federal elections. In a landmark 5-4 decision, the court's conservative bloc said that corporations had the same right to 1st Amendment free speech as individuals, and for that reason the government could not stop corporations from spending to help their favored candidates."
Students: What is the purpose and history of campaign finance reform legislation? What are the arguments for the majority decision? What is your opinion on this decision and why?

Girl Scouts & Women's History Month
It's no coincidence: March is Women's History Month, and March 7-13 marks Girl Scout Week in 2010.
One of the creative actions that helped millions of girls expand their horizons is the founding of the Girl Scouts of the USA by Juliet Gordon Lowe in 1912. Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, they build character and skills for success in the real world.
ProQuest has created a BookCart lesson to help students learn more about "Girl Scouts and Women's History."

Haitian Relief & The Red Cross
Since the devastating earthquake in Haiti in January, more than 430 Red Cross and Red Crescent workers from around the world are in there supporting thousands of local volunteers. Of that, more than 100 represent the American Red Cross. (Find out more about Haiti and view a pre-earthquake slideshow of images at ProQuest.)
Students can learn more about the challenges of disaster relief across the globe through the BookCart learning activity (details), "Red Cross and Red Crescent."
Each model Cart we provide is a complete, one-stop learning activity for researchers.

Regional Food Tour
It's appropriate and fitting that March is National Nutrition Month, since it arrives in between the end of winter and the start of spring. Winter holiday celebrations have passed and left many students and adults with cherished memories and frequently unwanted weight gain!
Healthy eating and routine exercise are necessary to maintain good health all year long. So, National Nutrition Month provides the opportunity of a friendly reminder to get back on track. Healthy eating can be an adventure and include many different combinations of ingredients that are found in recipes from all over the globe.
Have students compare foods from different continents. To begin, assign student four countries, each from a different continent, for which there are corresponding interviews in the CultureGrams Interviews feature.

World Conflicts Today
Women in Conflict Zones
Histories of world conflicts often primarily feature men because they are traditionally seen as the major players in such events, yet women have played major roles as politicians, soldiers, medical professionals, and caretakers during past conflicts and continue to do so.
Test your knowledge of women's roles in contemporary conflicts in this quiz, and then answer one essential question for critical thinking. World Conflicts Today as the timely, relevant answers!
Explore more timely, history-related themes inside Retroview and History Happenings, ProQuest's hands-on social studies email newsletters.
Spotlights & Challenge Quests
The list of women who have occupied significant roles in American history is varied and great. Women of the 21st century continue this tradition of excellence and are widely recognized for their myriad social, political, cultural, and artistic achievements.
SIRS Knowledge Source pays tribute to women's history with a wealth of articles and Web sites
in this month's Spotlight of the Month.
The 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins on March 6 in Anchorage, Alaska. A musher and a team of 12 to 16 dogs race across more than 1,150 miles of wild Alaskan terrain.
SIRS asks:
The 2010 Junior Iditarod is raced on February 27. In what year did the first Junior Iditarod take place?

Supreme Court Decision on Campaign Spending
Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and his conservative colleagues delivered a seismic jolt in January. They overturned two of the Supreme Court's past decisions to upend federal legislation that says corporations may not use their profits to support or oppose candidates and to declare unconstitutional a large portion of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform act passed in 2002.
The majority's 5-4 decision on the application of the First Amendment on freedom of speech was announced by Justice Kennedy, but would not have been possible without Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito.
There have been many very controversial Supreme Court decisions made in the past. This month's activity focuses on four eras when the Supreme Court made big decisions.
Assign students to write a report citing at least three resources from our research pathfinders:
- What major Supreme Court decisions were made in this era?
- What was the majority opinion on the most well-known decision?
- What was the minority opinion on this decision?
You'll find full coverage of these decisions in our Historical Newspapers Topics collections.
Top 3 Websites
