SIRS Decades
Thurgood Marshall, the Supreme Court, and Civil Rights
In 1954, Thurgood Marshall achieved national recognition for his successful argument of the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. The Supreme Court's decision in this landmark case overturned Plessy vs. Ferguson by ruling that public school segregation constituted an unconstitutional violation of rights guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.
Assign students to research the Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka decision that changed history and launched the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.
It's a project tailor-made for SIRS Decades.

Campaign for the 2016 Olympics
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) met in Copenhagen, Denmark, for its 121st session earlier this month. The key event to take place at the Copenhagen meeting was the naming of the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The winner? Rio!
With Chicago out of the running and the spotlight shining on Brazil and South America's first Olympic bid, assign students to serve on a mock IOC. These students will decide which host city will host the Olympics based on cases presented to them by their classmates.
Encourage students to use the photo, video, and slideshow galleries in CultureGrams to find images or footage to incorporate into their presentations. In class, have students present their country's cases to the mock IOC and have the committee members vote for the most successful or persuasive presentation. The have the committee members explain their reasons for their decision.
World Conflicts Today
UNICEF—Protecting the Children of the World
October is UNICEF month. UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, is charged with protecting the world's children from violence and aiding their development. The organization is active in 190 countries, including those in which contemporary conflicts render life especially difficult for children—if they survive at all.
Sadly, children can also be drawn into conflicts in areas where there is relatively little overt violence. In Northern Ireland, for example, a 2002 survey showed that Catholic and Protestant children as young as three had learned to hold symbols of each other's traditions in contempt.
Read through the Overviews from the Colombia and Darfur reports in World Conflicts Today; then answer the essential questions for critical thinking associated with each of the photos in our activity.

Think 1994: The Health Care Reform Debate
Today, the U.S. is in the process of another health care reform effort, led by President Obama and Congressional Democrats. The reform this time is more modest and would create a combination of private health insurance for those already covered by employers and a public option that would cover all the other uninsured or underinsured. How does the debate during the Clinton Presidency mirror the pro vs. con arguments being used today?
Students: What were some of the arguments against health care reform during the Clinton administration? What were some of the arguments for health care reform? What is your position on health care reform, and why?
