SIRS Discoverer Lesson Plan
  SIRS Discoverer
Native American Culture & Pride

November is American Indian Heritage Month. Assign students a topic that focuses on some aspect of Native American life and culture: How is an aspect the same or different from other minority groups? What reasons would you give for the relative difference in Native American and the average American lifestyle? SIRS Discoverer gives students the insights they need to learn and explore these topics.

President Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Nobel Committee announced last month.

Students: Should the Peace Prize be earned by accomplishments, or by the actions that have the potential to create new ways of implementing world peace? Why does (or why doesn't) Obama deserve the Peace Prize? Answer these questions with the all-new eLibrary (new 2-minute video).

Charles Darwin, Ardi, and Creationism

The year 2009 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of "On the Origin of Species."

ProQuest has created a BookCart lesson plan to help your students learn more about "Evolution & Intelligent Design."

SIRS Decades
Lessons: Stock Market Crash of 1929

The 80th anniversary of the collapse of the Stock Market of the 1920s bears an eerie resemblance to the stock market crash of 2008. The 1920s had been years of speculation on Wall Street similar to the current decade.

Document Based Question: Describe public reaction to the stock market crash of 1929 and identify tax, tariff and investment policies during the Harding and Coolidge administrations that redistributed wealth in America and may have led to the crash.

It's a research assignment tailor-made for primary source-rich SIRS Decades.

SIRS Leading Issues Activity

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill & Environmentalism

It's been twenty years since the Exxon Valdez oil tanker ran aground in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The accident is considered one of the most devastating human-caused environmental disasters ever to occur at sea. It damaged 730 miles of coastline and Exxon spent over $1 billion cleaning up the damage.

Assign students to explore the Pro or Con side of our pair of issues on environmentalism. Students should address the essential question for critical thinking included with both issues and cite at least three quality resources from vetted sources.

Our SIRS Leading Issues—Pollution and Drilling for Oil—are a great place to start. Get the facts in our new SIRS Issues Researcher solution (video).

The Fall and the Rise of the Taliban

How much do your students know about Afghanistan, the Taliban, and Al-Qaeda after eight years and the shift of media focus in the "War on Terror" to Iraq?

Students: What is Sharia law and how is it enforced by the Taliban in Afghanistan? Why does the Taliban continue to ally with Al-Qaeda? What is the current status of Operation Enduring Freedom?

History of Aviation

The history of man-made flying devices goes back to Ancient Greece and China where devices such as balloons filled with hot air, kites, and bird-like devices launched from on high.

ProQuest has created a BookCart learning activity appropriate for elementary or middle school students to dig into this topic: "Aviation History.''

eLibrary Curriculum Edition (new!)
Charles Darwin & "The Origin of the Species"

Charles Darwin was an English naturalist who realized and presented compelling evidence that all species of life evolved over time from common ancestors. He called that process natural selection.

ProQuest has created a BookCart learning activity (details) for students to learn more about the controversy created by Darwin's theory of evolution and the biblical version of creation and/or the theory of intelligent design, "Evolution vs. Creationism in the Schools." Each model Cart we provide is a complete and one-stop learning activity for your pupils.

CultureGrams
German Unification Challenge

This month marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on 11.9.89. The event paved the way for the unification of former East Germany and West Germany as a single country less than one year later, on 10.3.90.

To emphasize the significance of the event, have students analyze the challenges Germany unification presented. Then have them examine similarities and differences between two separate countries and imagine a hypothetical scenario in which they merge. What challenges would the new country face? How would the country benefit?

World Conflicts Today
Obama and the Nobel Peace Prize

In October, President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009. In announcing its decision, the Norwegian Nobel Committee cited Obama's "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," and emphasized in particular "Obama's vision of a work for a world without nuclear weapons."

Do you think President Obama deserved to win the Nobel Peace Prize? How do you think the prize will affect his dealings with today's world conflicts? Would you have awarded Obama the prize?

In order to answer these questions, pretend you are on the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Break into groups of five and assign each committee member a conflict that involves the United States from World Conflicts Today.

Question: How would the resolution of this conflict, or progress toward such a resolution, positively affect prospects for world peace? When (if ever) might the use of force be necessary to do so?

Spotlights & Challenge Quests
Native Americans are an integral part of American history, culture and character.

During National American Indian Heritage Month, SIRS honors Native Americans and promotes cultural understanding in this month's SIRS Spotlight of the Month.

Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski labored for years carving the image of the Sioux leader Crazy Horse into a mountain peak in South Dakota.

SIRS asks: When did Ziolkowski begin his massive artistic and historical undertaking?

ProQuest Historical Newspapers
Symbolic End of the Cold War

November 9 marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall that divided the Communist East and the Democratic West Germany. Berlin was located in East Germany; and the wall separated and contrasted the freedom of the western sector with that of the communist system of the eastern sector.

When President Ronald Reagan told Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down that wall," many were skeptical it would actually happen. However, the growing wave of public demand for reform swept through East Germany and forced the wall down in November of 1989. It would signal the beginning of the end of the Cold War and ushered in changes throughout Eastern Europe.

Students: How did the policies of Ronald Reagan help end the "Cold War"? How did life in the eastern sector differ from life in the western sector of Berlin? How did the fall of the Berlin Wall impact the rise of democracy in countries behind the Iron Curtain?
