READING A-Z BACK-TO-SCHOOL EXTRAVAGANZA

TEACHING THE CONSTITUTION

Did you know that September 17 is Constitution Day?

Not many people do--which is why a new law requires every school receiving federal funds to teach the Constitution on this national holiday, the anniversary of the 1787 signing. The purpose of the law is to ensure that Americans are educated about the foundations of the country's government.

When Constitution Day falls on a weekend, as it does this year, teachers have leeway regarding whether to present the topic the week before or the week after the holiday.
